Repairing a Commercial Toilet That Won't Stop Flushing

A perpetually flushing toilet in your commercial building is a real nuisance. Nobody wants to deal with toilet overflow. 1. Gather Your Tools

Before you start working on the plumbing issue, make sure you have the following tools:

• Flathead screwdriver
• Wrench
• Soft, absorbent cloth
• Fine piece of wire

2. Turn Off the Water To Curb a Toilet Flood

Facing the toilet, you’ll see a slotted circle or a circular cover located on the short arm opposite the flush lever. If there is a cover, pry it off. Insert the screwdriver into the slot and turn to shut off the water.

3. Remove the Gasket

Use your wrench to loosen the gasket cover, which is the large, flat-sided circle at the very top of the unit. Avoid scratching the chrome by using your cloth between the wrench and the gasket cover. Loosen it just a bit, then turn it by hand. Use your cloth to soak up any water that leaked out.

4. Clean or Replace the Gasket

Clean any buildup or debris from the gasket and use your fine wire to clear the little weep hole. Be careful not to enlarge the hole. If the gasket is damaged, replace it with a new one. Put the gasket in place, replace the cover and tighten. Don't forget to turn the water back on when you're finished.
Don't tolerate a constantly flushing toilet. Clean or replace your flushometer gasket to avoid toilet overflow.

Category 3 Water Damage

There are three different levels of damage when it comes to water damage. Category 3 damage is by far the worst. 5 Common Sewer Problems

Your building’s biggest drain is its sewer line. Major problems can occur as a result of a damaged or blocked sewer line. These issues can wreak havoc on a commercial building if they aren’t discovered and solved early on. Beware of the following potential problems.

1. Substances Building Up
Never put grease down a drain; it’ll solidify and build up in the pipes. Coffee grounds are also one of the worst substances for a drain.

2. Foreign Objects Getting Stuck
Sanitary sewer lines and bathroom drains — both residential and commercial — are designed to handle only human waste and toilet tissue. Nothing else should be put down the drains. Even paper towels and “flushable wipes” are harmful to septic systems.

3. Tree Roots Growing
In their search for moisture and nutrients, tree roots will invariably find your sewer system. They’ll even grow into the line by infiltrating cracks that develop in the pipes. This can cause serious problems such as pipe breaks, as well as leaking or blocked sewer lines. A toilet overflow is often the first sign of a sewer blockage.

4. Lines Failing
Freezing and thawing cycles in the ground, shifting soil, tree roots or the settling of a structure can cause pipe breaks, cracks or collapse. When damaged sewer lines leak, the water will saturate the ground surrounding the pipes, causing more damage to the line when it freezes. Piping that isn't made of PVC is at risk of deteriorating and can give way, obstructing flow through the pipe.

5. Pipes Sagging
Over time, parts of pipes will sag deeper into the ground. Water, waste, and sediment will then collect in this “bellied” area and get trapped, blocking the line from flowing properly.

Sunflower County Commercial Water Damage

On Saturday, September 14, 2019, a local church in Indianola, Mississippi, experienced a water damage.  The cause of loss was a pipe underneath the sink.  The church called SERVPRO of Greenville/Cleveland for assistance in cleaning up their water damage.  The technicians were dispatched to Indianola to extract water from the affected areas and to set air movers and Dehus to dry the many rooms affected.  The crew chief went back daily to monitor the equipment and check on the drying status of the material readings.  After three days of drying, the Indianola church's affected materials were dry.

Megan Brumfield lives in Cleveland, and she has been working for SERVPRO of Greenville/Cleveland since November of 2012.  Megan has currently been working for us for a little over six years.
